Åsa Maria Bengtsson

Sweden, b. 1956 in Östersund, lives and works in Malmö.

Visual artist. Grafikskolan Forum in Malmö between 1982-1987.

First soundwork: me, we and everyone else 1996. Sculptures in wax, photo, video and sound.

I work in different techniques: mainly video/film, sound, photography, sculpture and installation, often with sound as an element in installations.

My most significant sound-project is (just water), made 2001-2002, where I invited other people to contribute with sounds of water. This was spread over the Internet and I received different sounds from about fifty people. From the collected sounds I composed a piece of “music” in my computer, presented as an installation with thirty speakers stand-ing on each other.

In the outdoor-work Down the drain you could hear laughs and water-sounds coming from a drain. On one occasion presented in a lavatory.

In my videos I work a lot with the sound, e.g. in SURFACE, where the sound tells us one thing and the images something else; in the video installation Out of Sync (about melancholy) where a woman performs an inverted striptease act. She recites a text about the state of melancholy where all the natural pauses are cut out.
