B. 1966 in Sweden, lives and works in Copenhagen/ Berlin.

Studied at Trondheim Academy of Fine Art, Norway, and at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, MFA from the latter (Dept. of Theory and Communication).

First sound work: One Chair, One voice, Falkenberg 2002.

 

Åsa Sonjasdotter focuses on place, identity, power, relations and language. Her projects often function as social forums, in which the artist herself often acts and interacts with the subjects involved. Collaborating with other artists or selected groups, she works towards the realization of projects, which address societal issues while being meaningful to the everyday life of the individuals involved.

 

Selected projects and exhibitions include: Potato Perspective (Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Budapest 2006); Free Speech (Lund 2005); Copenhagen City Wall of Free Speech (Copenhagen 2004); Experiments with truth (New Delhi 2004); with love from 6.C (postcard correspondence project with Rådmandsgade School and curator Tone O. Nielsen, Copenhagen 2004; Aarhus 2004); One Chair - One Voice (Falkenberg 2002, Århus 2004).

 

Åsa Sonjasdotter has been a founding member of Women Down the Pub from 1996 to 2006, a feminist art and action group, which operates within the current debate on gender. Projects include the anthology Udsigt /View – feminist strategies in Danish visual art, 2004.

 

Sonjasdotter is a member of CRIR, the Christiania Researcher in Residency steering group, Copenhagen, Denmark; JA! separatist organisation for feminist artists, Sweden; UKK, Young Art Workers in Denmark; supportive member of Fast Video Collective, Copenhagen, Denmark; life time member of PODS (Proyectos Orientados al Desarollo Sostenible) Rain Forest Conservation Project, Costa Rica.
