Bodil Furu

Norway, b. 1976. Lives in Oslo.

1998-2002 The National Academy of Fine Art, Oslo. 1997-1998 Mølla Art School, Moss, Norway. 1996 Tallina Muusikool, Tallinn, Estonia.

First sound art work: 5x17 (2003)

My documentaries and video installations questions social structures and identity in diverse cultures and political contexts. I explore how people understand themselves and their community. My projects always start with interviews of people. These situations do often reveals new subjects and stretch my ideas into new dimensions. Through personal histories and thoughts I transform statements into a universe narrative.

In 5x17 Bodil Furu expands the traditional radio documentary by brutal and rhythmic editing. In interviews with five 17 year olds, Furu asks seemingly simple questions, which expose problems of an existential nature. The 17 year olds truly attempt to find answers, but their use of general phrases seem to eradicate the individual.

5x17 is a polyphonic narrative that ultimately reflects an almost disturbing unanimity. It is not a portrait of individuals, but rather a portrait of a generation.

FOLKEMUSIKK (Folk music)

Choir music, 2005. Performed by Ginnungagap.

Concept: Interview a choir about music. Use fragments of the interviews to compose a recitative polyphonic composition for a four-voice choir. Then make them sing and perform their own thoughts or ideas about music, refined and controlled first by the “composer” and then rehearsed and directed by a conductor. The music should sound like an illusive everyday conversation, fragmented and chaotic, but at the same time be strictly controlled.
