Eva Koch

Denmark, b. 1953. Lives in Copenhagen.

Royal Danish Academy in 1985-1992, including one year at Facultad de Bellas Artes, Barcelona, Spain 1989-90.

First sound art work: NineNow, 1993.

Eva Koch’s work varies from the clearly defined, concrete sculptural element to the immaterial seduction of the video image, to the invisible interference of the sound work. The works are site-specific, and relate actively to the space around them. The physical sculpture is an important element, because with all its stability it leaves a mark on or a trace in the world.

Eva Koch’s sculptures are large and relate in scale to the human body’s own physical presence, which is particularly true of the Sculpture of Earth and Light (a collaboration with Steen A.B. Høyer), which was made of 800.000 cubic meters of earth, and is the largest sculpture in Denmark.

Parallel to her sculptural work, Eva Koch has gradually drifted into the narrative element in her video work. In her works she especially circles around what it is to be a traveller. The extensive interactive video work Villar is such a narrative of a journey, of a family, of truth having several sides to it, and of memory being subjective. Told in a sensual and simple language, where images and words are each other’s extensions.
