Geirþruður Finnbogadottir Hjörvar
B. 1977 in Reykjavík.
Art school at the Iceland Academy of the Arts, then Konsthögskolan in Malmö.
First sound art work: Nothing To See 2001.
In Nothing To See a pop song is superimposed on a video recording of an empty parking lot and dates from 2001. The title is extracted from a mishearing of the lyrics.
Work tends to revolve around the formation of meaning through a line of association that leans towards a sense of paranoia and consists of videos, installations, and performances along with sound loops.
Crossovers and cooperations include Signal in the Heavens (2003-2006), which is a self-conscious curatorial project that took its own ontology as a frame of reference. This includes nearly random quotes from lyrics as well as overly weighted concepts from Christianity but for no particular reason. Most recent was a collaboration within the Signal in the Heavens’ framework that consisted of a musical performance of an ambient/heavy metal rendition of the Rolling Stones’ Time Is On My Side with additional lyrics from Empire.
