Hekla Dögg Jónsdóttir

B. 1969 in Reykjavík, Iceland, lives and works in Reykjavík and New York.

Graduated from The Icelandic College of Art and Crafts in 1994, next year guest student in Stadelschule, Frankfurt a.m. Germany. A BFA (1997) and a MFA (1999) from California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles. 1998 Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, in Maine, US.

Sound has become increasingly more important to my art. My first audio related installations relied on my fascination with opera and other traditional music arrangements. My more recent sculptures are made with sound-reacting cold cathode lights and surround sound speaker systems. When installed, the sound appears as a visual element and the structures respond to the level and frequency of the local audio. For example, field recordings of exploding fireworks trigger a naturalist fireworks display to a static spider like structure. Or in another piece, a selection of songs with the word fire in the title, cause a pile of red cathode lights to appear as the flickering flames of a bon fire when played.

Since 1999 internationally exhibited. Curator for several exhibitions. Lecturer at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. One of the founders of Kling & Bang gallery.
