"Quaint, extremely original, diverse, crazy, beautiful, sensuous, evil, compelling, uncompromising, unique and attentive." These are some of the words used by the press to describe Laila Skovmand's music and singing.
A huge need of self-expression through the voice has turned into an eternal journey into – and exploration of – the amazing and manifold expression of the voice. In 1998 Laila started to write songs in Mumbo Jumbo, where the sonority and the emotional expression is more important than telling a story with words. In 2002 she founded Laila & Symfobia.
She stands out with her experimental voice improvisations, alone and in collaboration with other musicians. In 2006 she made her premiere performance of Watervoice where she sings into water. She wrote music for the dance performance Obtstrucsong (Granhøj dans, 2005) and the performance Kama Sutra by Cantabile2 in 2002.
Received several grants from The National Arts Foundation. In 03-05 Laila & Symfobia received a major grant to get their experimental music to the small villages of Denmark.
