Laura Naukkarinen (Lau Nau)
Finland, b. 1980.
As musician an autodidact, played piano and sung in a choir since she was little. Academic education, but now mainly occupied with music and sound art besides of being a mom.
First sound art work: Sateenkaari-James, recorded 1996 and released 1998 on a Chamellows/Kiila 7” vinyl record by Fonal Records and Winter Cow Recordings.
Her main project is Lau Nau, under which name she plays abstract folk, a mosaic of a myriad of instruments, field sounds and singing that fall where they may, with free open structures, balancing on a thin wire of logical evolution, with surprising harmonies. Lau Nau’s debut album is released by the Chicago-based label Locust and it is not entirely solo work; it features also Pekko Käppi, Tomas Regan and Antti Tolvi. She has played various shows and tours in Europe and USA.
She also creates live sound art pieces and impro workshops for children and has a record label with Antti Tolvi, and has accompanied silent movies and photographs with other fellow musicians. Other groups are Hertta Lussu Ässä, Kiila, Avarus, Päivänsäde, the Anaksimandros and Chamellows, among others.
