Lena Ignestam
Sweden, b. 1965. Lives in Malmö.
Royal Danish Art Academy, Copenhagen 92-99.
Nordic School of Art, Karleby, Finland 88-90.
First sound work: Italian stone 97-99.
I work with sculpture/installations, examining structures in everyday life and hierarchies of power, displacements in seemingly stable phenomena. The works may look poetic and organic, but are based on thoughts about politics, economy, structures, balance contra imbalance.
Italian stone
A piece of marble rests on a metal stand with speakers and a cd-player inside. From the inside singing and talking is pouring out through two small holes. These voices of some elderly men are recorded in Italy. White marble has been used for thousands of years, is so deeply rooted in art history, yet underrated in contemporary art. I wanted to connect the marble with techniques of today, in order to establish a relation between past and present.
Collaborations
Platform 7 – a Danish/Swedish group for collaborative projects, exhibitions and discussions. Focus on the theme “individual contra group” led to The Strange, an ongoing project examining the boundaries between the wellknown and the unknown.
Ramona Kunstsalon – with Danish artist Carina Zunino. We arrange meetings, lectures and small trips.
