Lisa Jeannin
Sweden/Belgium, b. 1972 in Uppsala. Works in Antwerpen.
Art Academy of s’Hertogen Bosch 1995-96
Art Academy of Malmö 1996-2001
First sound art work: Ö/Island installation with video, Vilhelms boogiewoogie and performance, 1998.
Although often in the forms of video, animation, installation and performance, Lisa Jeannin’s work starts in the drawings. The subjects that she explores are mythology, communication, ideas of scale, alternation of the consciousness and perception.
Touching on themes which are difficult to explain in words, she fuses reality and the experience of art. She offers us familiar fragments taken from fairy-tales, B-films or what we usually perceive as reality, creating a world outside of the expectations of common sense. This world is inhabited by, among others, live tortoises, mummies, doll spiders and creatures from pop culture and mythology. Here, a tortoise becomes a steel guitar player or a fortune-teller and a spider might turn into a moviemaker. With humour and slight surrealism Lisa Jeannin invites us to see and hear unexpected combinations of sounds, images and episodes, playfully challenging our expectations.
