Lovisa Johansson

Sweden, b. 1969.

Master of fine arts, Konstfack, 1997

Bachelor of stage-design, the Dramatic Institute, 1999.

First sound piece: Alone, 1996.

As an artist, Lovisa focuses on contentful spaces; art to step into and be surrounded by. When working with sound, the emphasis is on the inner space, created as much by the listener as by the performer. Lovisa often explores the interplay of what is seen and what is heard – that intangible something that fills the gap between our senses.

Her sound art can be divided into two main categories: vocal pieces and sounds of objects. The vocal pieces are built by layers of voices, creating a ‘soundspace’ with both content and form. Existential themes recur – loneliness, love, death. But there is also a formally structured side, where the spoken word becomes rhythm and melody. One example is the triptych Being one, being two, being several that was shown at Röda Sten in Gothenburg 2006. In her second strand she investigates the material’s own voice, without electronic amplifying or modifying. At the House of Sculpture in Stockholm 2005, Lovisa presented Exsaltorium – a musical rain of salt, which is her most ambitious project to date of ‘material music’.

Lovisa is a member of the artist group Ljudit. Ljudits field of action is making site- specific sound installations outdoors in close collaboration with Nature.
