Minna Suoniemi

Finland, b. 1972 in Tampere. Based in Helsinki, works in Helsinki and Tampere.

Graduate of Helsinki Academy of Fine Arts and University of art and Design in Helsinki.

First worked with sound: in her video work Luft-gitarre – Airguitar in 2002.

“In the centre of my artistic practice is the hazy borderline between private and public. What interests me is the very act of acting – or not acting – to the camera. I like the idea of a failure, a failed attempt to act out a given role – and the recognition that the viewer experiences in relation to this act.

My work focuses on basic human emotions, relations between people and people’s actions determined by their role in a given situation and environ-ment. I play with identification, blended with a shared sense of embarrassment. The crossing point of personal and collective experiences is in the centre of my approach.”

Suoniemi currently works as a senior lecturer of Fine Arts in Tampere and is the founder of Huoltamo Gallery in Tampere. She has curated screenings and exhibitions in co-operation with Frame, Finnish Fund for Art Exchange and Huuto artist-run gallery in Helsinki.
