My projects often concern how we via narratives name and create meaning. I am interested in the writing and rewriting of history, and in how the reading of historical material is in constant flux according to a given context or interest. I am interested in how facts and fiction are interwoven – in our subjective memory as well as in collective memory; in the archive, the library, in the history book or at the museum. My work also concerns how the borderline between informal personal stories and official writing of history is flexible and how they mutually influence each other.
In my artistic practice I use video and film along with photography, drawing, text and sound. I experiment with how to combine these media in various ways according to their different abilities of constructing narrative structures. My work with different media takes place in a field between documentary and fiction, examining the narratives devices found in storytelling, history and the writing of history. By letting different voices and viewpoints meet, my projects explore relations between national identity, gender, language, space and urban structures.
Concerning sound I often work with interviews combined with field recordings from specific locations and more abstract sounds. I compose the recordings to created dense soundscapes, which sometimes nearly become musical compositions. Often these soundscapes are used together with photographic or filmic images.
Dialogue and collaboration are as well important factors in my work. In recent years I have been engaged in different forms of collaborations and organizational work. I am a member of the feminist artist group “Women Down the Pub” and ”The Production Unit”, a research project and forum for artists working with writing of history, narrative experiments and investigative journalism.
