Radio art channel and sounding web project

Sweden 2001 –

This is both a laboratory for making sound work, and an archive for presenting sound work.

We wanted to create an autonomous platform for radio that takes time, is playful and free. Work that experiments and tries out ideas, technologies, forms of expression, and that sometimes involves taking some kind of risk. SR c has always been, and still is, open to both long-timers and people who have never expressed themselves in radio, or even sound, before. This has been possible because of the supporting editorial board and staff: Link

Throughout the 5 1/2 years SR c has existed, we have developed collaborations with other sound artists, programmers, radio makers, interface designers, as well as writers, musicians, visual artists, philosophers, play wrights, and others. Approximately 280 people have been producing work and you find many of them in the list at the sub page OM at http://www.sr.se/src.

In some periods the intensity has been very high, with us in the studio mixing all days, or having open breakfasts and heated round table discussions, or broadcasting live for 6 hours in a row with DJ’s, sound installations and sometimes performances based on audience participation. At these times, SR c has been very much a process based, social project.

Other periods we have focused on realizing one complex idea, like Let them sing it for you, a web based sound art piece made in collaboration with Erik Bünger that so far has had over 2 million unique users all over the world. Or we’ve been working on developing the SR c site itself, like when Erik Sandelin built the lyrical rainbow database at the home page, in which you can navigate all SR c programs. There is also an English/International page where you find some of the programs made for SR c in English, Icelandic, Norwegian, Hebrew, Arabic, German or other languages.

At this point, SR c is still producing work as well as focusing on how to secure the site for the future. There are hundreds of hours to listen to, on-demand or just directly from the 24-hour streaming, and our intention has always been that all the unique pieces that are here, will stay. (It’s easier to argue if the site is well visited, so please tell your friends about http://www.sr.se/src

SR c is part of the Swedish Radio Drama department and is heard at P1 every now and then, but the web is really where you find it all. Other spaces SR c has exhibited in or has had performances at are, amongst others: Stockholm New Music, Fylkingen, Tempo Dokumentär festival, Perfect Performance, Moderna Muséet(all in Stockholm).

And elsewhere: Frictionsfriktioner (Uppsala), Galleri Box (Göteborg), ISEA/International Symposium on Electronic Art (Helsinki FI, Tallin E), Pixelache/Particle Wave (Helsinki, FI), New Meaning (NO)
